How to Get the Most Out of Your Internship

We (Petra and Julius) have spent the last three months interning at HAWP Project, practising our marketing knowledge and trying to become marketing gurus. It sometimes seems otherwise, but you only have a limited amount of time to learn everything you set yourself out to learn during your placement. Here is what we have learned about making the most of your time during your internship.

Ask Questions

I have once read an article about asking questions. It said that the more questions you ask, the more information you will learn. The same rule you can apply to your internship.

It is true that there are no bad questions. Even though it may seem to you that asking too many questions makes you seem annoying (to your boss) and incompetent, but in reality, it shows that you care about what you are doing and you want to bring the best results. Therefore, be curious about everything, and ask questions not only to learn as much as possible but show that you care about your duties.

Take Notes

When you ask an important question, take notes. Even if you think it is not relevant to you. You never know, you may be able to use your notes again and they can help you.

It is also a good idea to revise your notes. When you revise notes, you will learn your internship material better. That will not only be beneficial professionally as you will know more about your profession, but this will also get you ahead in the internship.

Be Proactive

Be brave enough to speak out loud about your ideas. It is always possible that you have ideas that your peers at your company haven’t thought of. Do not forget that you are from outside of the company, so your ideas are fresh and new.

Many employers choose to hire interns because they contribute interesting ideas, and have a fresh perspective on the business. Therefore, by speaking up, you’re often fulfilling their expectations. Also, the best way to improve at what you do is to try new things, which is why being proactive is so important.

Be Open Minded

You have chosen to do an internship because you want to learn something. It means that you have many things to learn before you leave and if you stay open minded, you gain the most valuable skills.

Be prepared to deal with all sorts of issues and tasks – not just a definite list. An internship is not just about having a set list of responsibilities with no creativity involved. You are trying to get immersed into a brand new company, get to know the industry, and the best way to do that is to stay open to the challenges and new tasks you may be asked to do.

Keep Your Future Goals in Mind

Everything you learn or are going to learn at the internship will help you with your future goals in your career or in your personal life. Therefore, when interning, it is important to keep in mind that your future goals are the most important. That can be anything, from launching a new fashion company to simply trying to set yourself up for the real world professionally. If you know what you want to achieve through the internship, you will stay focused and motivated through the experience.
